Dallas County sheriff's deputies were searching for a 45-year-old prisoner who escaped Tuesday afternoon while on laundry duty.

The escapee, Michael Monk, has a history of burglary and driving under the influence, said Kim Leach, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Monk was being transported by a detention officer when he jumped out of a vehicle and fled in the area of Fort Worth Avenue and Westmoreland Road in West Dallas, Leach said.

Dallas police were helping with the search, along with a canine team and a police helicopter.
